This is the 1978 World Cup match Schedule with information about the 11th Football World Cup for viewing and printing. The World Cup finals of the 11th Football World Cup "Argentina 78" was held from 1st to 25th of June in 1978.

Of 106 reported associations, 95 teams took part in the qualifying. The defending champions West Germany and Argentina, the hosts were directly qualified.

The mode of the final tournament was similar to the 1974 World Cup. The 16 qualified teams played in the first round in four groups of 4 teams. The first two of each group moved into the second round. In this there were two groups of 4 teams. The two group winners then were in the final. There, the hosts won 3-1 against the Netherlands.

1978 was the first final since World War 2, in which neither Brazil nor Germany took part. + + + In the last game of the German in the second round in Group 4, there was the so-called "shame of Cordoba". The last game under coach Helmut Schoen the German World Champion of 1974 lost 3-2. This was Austria's first victory against Germany for 47 years. Both teams were eliminated in this round, however.
