In Europe, the South American football got some attention, because of the first-time participation and success of Uruguay at the Olympics. That´s why some people in France in 1924 were thinking about a world football tournament. Said and done, the world football association accepted the idea in 1928 and two years later the tournament should take place in Uruguay, in honor of the Olympic gold medalist of 1924 and 1928. The tournament was held only in the capital Montevideo. At the opening-match there where only about 1.000 - 4.444 spectators, as different sources tell.
The only time in World Cup history there was not a qualification round for this World Cup. Germany, Austria, Spain and England (leaving the FIFA) took not take part for various reasons. Only four European teams traveled about 3 weeks on a steamship to Uruguay.
Therefore, since only 13 teams participated, there were four groups, followed by the semifinals of the group winners and the final. Originally a purely knocked out Tournament was planned. A game for 3rd place did not take place.
The hosts and reigning double Olympic champion from South America became the first football World Champion with a 4-2 victory over Argentina in the final.
